The Inside Story of “No Presents” by Gloria Raynor

 November 15, 2017

Christmas is much more than a time for giving presents.

A young girl is shocked to find no presents beneath the tree.

Seasons change. Flowers blossom and seeds sprout; leaves fall from the trees; snow covers everything….

With age and maturity, I have come to realize a few things:

  • Life itself is a gift, and how we use that gift depends very much on our acceptance of the Giver of the gift.
  • Little things, such as small mercies, can leave lasting impacts on one’s life.
  • The thoughts and gesture of friends and family can be more meaningful than elaborate gifts brought from a store.

The core of my poem is that we should all be thankful for small favors. A simple gift can be worth far more than the cost of rubies.

Gloria Raynor was born in the beautiful island of Jamaica and emigrated to Canada in 1976. She is a motivational speaker, poet, and writer. When she isn’t writing, she’s busy caring for people who are oppressed and depressed physically from the emotional cares of this life. Gloria is currently working on the publication of a book entitled Bad Girls and Boys of the Bible.

  1. A poem is a piece of art. There is meaning in the brush strokes. There is meaning in the “negative space”.

Gloria Raynor’s poem is a moving, important piece of art. In my mind I name it, “Presents or Presence”, because in the presents’ absence (one might say, “negative space”) Christ’s Presence is found. What a gift!
